Overview
This Hike to Songota Waterfalls is a real adventure and is a day trip as it goes through small paths, the river with a little simple climbing, or challenges for those who wish to go up to the waterfall, not far from Arusha on the slopes of Mount Meru. The hike takes you up from the highway through the landscape, at the foothills of Mount Meru, passing coffee and banana plantations, where our guide will explain to you some of the different things that take place in the area. The sort of coffee, bananas, and avocados that are grown in the area.
It is also possible to visit one of the small local schools, and alike in the area (If you do, bring a few school supplies along for the children), we will spend about 1 to 2 hours all depending on the weather, your desire to spend time around or in the waterfall if you should want to take a swim in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall.
During the visit, we will serve a lunch box and a refreshing drink, and then the car will drop you off back at your hotel or lodge.
The waterfall is not far from Arusha and is a great way to escape the city. After being dropped off at the edge of the highway, we will walk for about 30 minutes before reaching the river, which we will follow along and hike in.
You will have to be fairly fit, and be able to swim (You can pass that place for swimming, without passing the water) as there will be areas with ponds you might need to swim to pass, and rocks and boulders to climb/pass (the recommended minimum height is 150 cm), and you will reach the Songota waterfalls after about 3-4 hours (You will stop a lot for photo’s and more) and another 6 km hike through the river. The hike will bring you to a slender cascade surrounded by trees, where you can swim and wade. Notice: for the waterfall, remember to carry or wear sandals with straps, as it can be challenging to walk out into the waterfall on the stones in the small waterfall lake. You may also want to change footwear after the walk in the river.
When on the excursion from Arusha to the slopes of Mount Meru to the Songota falls, you will also be able to see some of the local wildlife like chameleons, birds, and the occasional monkey as you hike through the forest and cool off in the pool at the base of Songota Waterfall.
This is a beautiful little waterfall, with its principal advantage being its proximity to Arusha.
NOTICE: We have 3 different trips to the Songota Waterfalls.
- Drive to and from the waterfall. The total walk distance is about 1 km, including stairs. 30 USD.
- Hike from the main highway, along the small roads to the waterfall. The total walk distance is about 10 km, plus stairs. You can be picked up by car at the waterfall to drive back, which will shorten the distance by about 5 km. 40 USD.
- Hike up to an entry point for the river, then walk through the river, climb the boulders, and challenge yourself. (you should be reasonably fit) The total walk distance is about 11 km, 2 km from the highway to the river, then 4 km through the river, plus stairs. You can be picked up by car at the waterfall to drive back which will shorten the distance by about 5 km. (This activity)

We enjoyed the adventure hike up through the Songota River to Songota waterfalls. You need to be a little fit on your feet as it has some challenges here and there. but a normal fit person should be able to do it, even kids, but from maybe 7-8 years of age. At one or two places you will be in ponds to pass with water to your hips or waistline.
